Can you use Medicare rebates for Physiotherapy?
The short answer YES, you can use Medicare rebates for physiotherapy services!
Physiotherapy is widely regarded as an excellent treatment option for all kinds of musculoskeletal conditions, such as hip and knee arthritis, shoulder rotator cuff tears and bursitis, tendon pain, low back pain and neck pain. We want to be able to help as many people as possible, to become pain free and meet their injury needs, so our clinic is very proud to accept and process Medicare rebatable physiotherapy consultations.
How do Medicare rebates work for physiotherapy?
Overall, it is quite an easy process to claim a medicare rebate for physiotherapy sessions.
Firstly, there are some small steps that you will need to be complete before being able to claim Medicare rebates for your physiotherapy session
Step 1- you will need to visit your GP for an appointment for a Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC).
Step 2- your GP will need to deem that you have a chronic condition and then approve you for up to 5 physiotherapy sessions, at the clinic of your choosing.
Step 3- you then attend one of our Physio Fit clinics in Adelaide, have an amazing experience and then payment is done as so - you pay the full up front cost of the appointment and then our reception team will provide you with an invoice that you can then use to receive your medicare claim of $52.95 reimbursed into your bank account.
What to consider when claiming Medicare rebates for Physiotherapy treatment
You are able to claim only for the number of sessions prescribed to you by your GP for the relevant allied health profession, up to five per year in total. This means that you may be given four physio and one podiatry consults, for which this can only be used
You are eligible for five Allied Health visits per calendar year on your Medicare EPC, but only if your GP determines that you have a chronic health condition; chronic meaning that you’re had the issue for greater than three months (Don’t even get me started that it is only for issues deemed chronic and then they ONLY give you five visits!)
Your five visits will refresh each calendar year, however you will need a new referral from your GP each year to make use of the Medicare Rebate.
As we mentioned earlier, you will pay the full fee for the physiotherapy session at the end of the appointment and then be provided with an invoice - this can be used to reimburse $52.95 back into your bank account. The good news?! $52.95 is just as good if not better than most private health rebates!
Do you bulk bill Medicare rebates?
Unfortunately, in order to provide the amazing service we do we cannot bulk bill a Medicare EPC. As we provide longer appointment times (60 and 30 minute appointments) and we don’t believe our service should be watered down, as you may see with some places bulk billing Medicare appointments and doing 10-15 minute appointments, then we do have to charge a small gap payment. So, like most GP clinics these days, patients will need to pay the invoice upfront, then claim the rebate back through Medicare.
So, what’s next? How do I get started on Medicare Rebates for Physiotherapy?
The first step is to book in with your trusted GP and ask them to complete the Medicare EPC paperwork. Then you simply need to call us or book online, and we can get started on having you moving and feeling better as soon as possible! We will be in constant contact with your GP about your progress in order to get you the absolute best result possible!
If you already have private insurance, you should use your Medicare entitlements first, then use your private health rebates for any further physiotherapy treatments thereafter.
You cannot use both Medicare and private health insurance claiming on the same appointment.
