FAQ’s About Physio for Runners at Aspire Physiotherapy Glenelg
Can Physio help with running?
Yes we absolutely can. It’s best to see a Physio who also has an interest in running, as they will better understand the unique demands of distance running on the body. Physio’s can help reduce pain from injury, prevent future injury, and also guide you on enhancing your running technique and performance.
How do you rehab a running injury?
Rehabilitating a running injury can be a frustrating process. Most runners just want to keep running, so it can take some patience if you have to reduce your running load during your recovery period. Ultimately it’s crucial to understand why the injury developed in the first place, then follow treatment to address this.
Often a running injury needs an initial period of reduced running load, to reduce the strain on the injured area. During the period of relative rest, rehabilitation exercises can be performed, which may focus on increasing strength, control, or adjusting your technique. As you then master these exercises, a structured return to your full normal running schedule will see you back to running in no time.
What are the top 3 running injuries?
Some of the most common injuries we see in runners include
- Plantar fasciitis
- Patella tendinopathy
- Iliotibial band syndrome
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Shin splints
- Stress fractures
How can I speed up my running injury recovery?
Seeking professional help from a Physio early will give you the best chance of a faster recovery. The sooner that we can assess you, and identify the contributing factors to your injury, the sooner we can get you on the path to recovery.
How do I get rid of knee pain after running?
This depends greatly on the cause of your knee pain, which can be determined by a Physio assessment. Initially you may trial things like applying ice to your knee, reducing your overall running load, and increasing your stretching of your leg muscles.
Is knee pain after running normal?
No knee pain after running is not normal. After running it can be normal to experience fatigue or discomfort in your muscles, due to the effort of running, but pain in your joints is not normal, and should be investigated.
Should I run through pain?
No do not run through pain if it is greater than 3/10 pain. Pain is one of the ways your body communicates with you, and feeling pain is a sign to slow down or stop. If pain persists, make sure you book in to see a Physio for a full assessment and treatment of your injury.
Why does my foot hurt after running?
Pain in your foot can be due to an issue in your foot, or often we see foot pain as a result of weakness somewhere else in your body. Ultimately if your foot hurts after running, there is something that needs adjusting in your running technique, or an area you may need to build more strength. A Physio appointment. or Running Assessment would be a great option to investigate, and fully understand what your body needs.
